DAYTON —

Police have identified a person of interest in the death of Bradlee Thompson, 30, at 613 Hulbert St. in the early morning hours of New Year’s Day.

Tyler Mentel, 18, is being held in the Montgomery County Jail on a probation violation. He has not been charged in connection to Thompson’s death, but police said Friday that he is a person of interest.

Mentel was one of three people handcuffed at the Days Inn on Miller Lane and taken in for questioning by police Wednesday morning.

He was initially released, but was arrested on the probation violation at his Vermont Avenue home Friday and booked into the jail at about 1:25 p.m.

Neighbors on Hulbert Street said Mentel stayed at the house where Thompson was slain on occasion.

Thompson was found shot at least once on New Year’s Day as police investigated bullet holes in a nearby house.

Neighbors reported they’d heard shots in the area about 3 a.m.

Mentel is on probation after a June arrest for improperly handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle. He was given intervention in lieu of conviction in December.

The conditions of his probation include that he not possess a firearm, that he undergo treatment at the DayMont Behavioral Health Care Center, that he work towards obtaining a GED, abstain from use of drugs and alcohol and pay all court costs and fees, among other conditions, according to court records.

It is unknown which condition he violated.
