Police Blotter

Just looking for a pipe

By Marc Katz

Staff Writer

VANDALIA – By the time officers arrived around 11 p.m. on a complaint of erratic driving without the use of headlights, a subject was standing next to a parked pickup truck, holding the keys with the driver’s door open. He was also holding a pair of pink and white gym shoes that probably didn’t fit.

He said he was just there looking for a pipe – to be used for marijuana - a person he had just met told him could be found in the truck, which showed damage from several small hit-and-run incidents in Huber Heights – from where the truck was stolen - earlier in the evening.

Evidence included a blue tailgate from another vehicle stuck in the grille. The person who alerted him to the truck, and allegedly gave him the keys, was nowhere to be found.

The officer on call recognized the subject as a person who could be in this predicament.

Trying to be helpful, the subject said he had a marijuana smoking pipe in one of his pockets, but didn’t know which one. He also had some pills he obtained from some “kid,” but wasn’t sure what they were. The officer also found a syringe in a pocket the subject said he forgot he had.

Arrested for receiving stolen property, the subject was released when it could not be proven he had actually driven the vehicle, since he said he was walking to his girlfriend’s place when he was confronted by the guy who informed him about the truck.

Criminal charges for drugs were being reviewed.
