DAYTON —
Police are looking for a man who fired a handgun into a car three times Friday afternoon to kill one of two men who were in it.
The victim was identified early Friday evening as 28-year-old Willy Boddie Jr., and homicide detectives are interviewing the passenger who was not injured in the gunfire at a car wash on West Riverview Avenue, Dayton Lt. Donald Burden said.
“We don’t know if maybe there was someone else involved,” Burden said.
Police were dispatched to H& H Service Center, 2647 W. Riverview Ave., just after 3 p.m. on a report of a shooting at the business.
Police, with their service weapons drawn, searched nearby streets and alleys for the gunman described as a male of medium height who was wearing a black hoodie, Burden said. Police also shut down West Riverview Avenue for a time as part of the investigation.
Detectives believe the shooter used a medium-caliber Glock pistol, Bardun said.
Investigators are looking into whether any of the businesses in the area have surveillance cameras that might have recorded information helpful to the investigation, Burden said.
In less than four days the number of deaths by gunfire in the city in 2013 more than doubled from three to seven.
On Tuesday night, 27-year-old Jillian Miles was found shot to death in her home on West Parkwood Avenue. Police found her dead, in her bathrobe, on the floor. Her children, ages 2 and 1, were in the living room when police arrived.
The second occurred Wednesday afternoon, when 95-year-old Oscar Beason was found dead at the bottom of the stairs in his home on Hochwalt Avenue. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office determined that Beason had been shot in the head multiple times.
The third occurred Wednesday night, when 29-year-old Jason Rutledge was pronounced dead at Good Samaritan Hospital following a shooting in the 2000 block of Ravenwood Avenue. A friend drove Rutledge to the hospital from the shooting.
There have been no arrests in any of the homicides.
Tuesday to Wednesday was the deadliest two days in the city since 2010 when three people were killed in just under 48 hours between late May 27 and May 29.
With Friday afternoon’s shooting, the city’s homicide total for the year is now at eight. The total includes one person killed by police and one whose death this week was ruled a justifiable homicide. The other six have been classified as unsolved.
Burden said until police can identify the victim in Friday afternoon’s shooting, “we don’t know for certain” whether the latest victim is connected to any of the other recent fatal shootings.
The police department is asking anyone who might have seen anything regarding the shooting at the car wash, or has any information about what happened, to call (937) 333-COPS.
