Springboro PD warn of scam to deceive elderly

By Frazier Smith

SPRINGBORO —

Police on Wednesday are warning residents of a possible scam to deceive the elderly stemming from a recent incident involving someone claiming to be with a county services program.

A man who was described as being “dressed professionally with a gray sports coat” showed up at the home of a Springboro resident at about noon on Monday, posing as an employee from the Warren County Elderly Services Program, Springboro Detective Tom Faulkner said.

The man had called the woman the Friday before to set up the appointment. The woman is in her 80s, the detective said.

Once he gained entry to the home, he offered to discuss Medicare with her and began to get her personal information when the woman’s daughter called, Faulkner said.

That call apparently spooked the man and he quickly left the home.

While at her residence, the man provided an actual business card of a county elderly services program employee. Faulkner said police couldn’t lift a fingerprint off the card because it had been handled by too many other people.

The daughter called the services program to verify the appointment and told police that the agency informed her that its employees do not make house calls and have no males who work for the agency, Faulkner said.

Police had not contacted the agency by late Wednesday afternoon, he said, but the police division wanted to get the word out as soon as possible.

Faulkner said the incident is the first the police department is aware of related to anymore posing as employee of the services agency.

“If there’s any kind of suspicion” about anyone who comes to your home, “you can always turn them away and contact them yourself at another time” to reschedule a home visit, Faulkner said in the way of offering advice.

Anyone who believes they have information about this incident or notices any person visiting residences who may arouse suspicion is asked to call police at (937) 748-0611.
