DAYTON, Ohio —

A 27-year-old man was found shot to death in his apartment Tuesday night and police are searching for two men seen leaving the neighborhood in a full-size SUV, possibly a Chevy Suburban.

The Montgomery County Coroner identified the victim as Frederick M. Rodgers Jr.

Police said he was found in the living room of his home at 3545 Dorham Place shot “multiple times,” Dayton Sgt. Mark Spiers said.

According to the preliminary homicide investigation, it appears Rodgers collapsed on the couch, Spiers said. The victim used a cane, investigators believe, but they aren’t sure whether he was disabled.

“He was mobile,” Spiers said. There was no sign of forced entry, and Rodgers appeared to live alone.

Shell casings have been found inside and outside the apartment, where several people — including the victim’s family — gathered soon after the incident at the two-story, multi-family residence in the Wesleyan Hill neighborhood.

The information about the two men came from witnesses, who were being interviewed late Tuesday night, Spiers said.

“As far as we know, we have no history here or prior complaints” at the address, the sergeant said. “There have been complaints about drugs (in the apartment complex), but as far as we know this individual has no prior history of any drug involvement.”
