Foodbank buys Dayton property for $5

By Jeremy Kelley

Dayton City Commission on Wednesday approved the sale of a 7.6-acre former Reynolds and Reynolds lot just west of I-75 to The Foodbank Inc. for $5.

Foodbank CEO Michelle Riley said her group has operated in a rented building at 427 Washington St. for more than 20 years. They plan to build a new 30,000 square-foot warehouse with office space at the new site, immediately south of the Germantown-Washington intersection, and move in by Dec. 1. The facility will cost $1.6 million to build, according to Riley.

“The old building was not set up and designed for food distribution,” Riley said. “We feel the new building will keep us for the next 10 to 15 years.”

Riley said the new facility will allow the Foodbank to expand its distribution of fruits and vegetables received from local grocery stores on the day they will no longer sell them.

According to city documents, Dayton has owned the property since 2003 and marketed it for years, but received little interest from developers because of poor accessibility.
