DAYTON —

Ashley Martin thought she would get a Christmas present with the birth of her daughter, but instead received the gift on New Year’s Day.

“I was hoping for Christmas,” she said, sitting in her Miami Valley Hospital bed cradling the napping newborn. “I bought her a Christmas outfit.”

Martin gave birth to Kailynn Stoltz at 1:33 a.m. Tuesday, the first baby born in Montgomery County in 2013. She weighed 8 pounds and 4 ounces and was 21 1/2 inches in length.

“Everybody kept saying you’re going to have the New Year’s baby and I said, ‘No, I’m not.’”

Martin and the baby’s father, auto dealership salesman Craig Stoltz, 28, reside in Dayton. Kailynn will have plenty of family as company. She has five siblings: Baileigh, 11, Kyleigh, 9, Jayden, 7, Bryson, 4, and Rylan, 17 months.

Kailynn’s birth marked the first time in several years the first New Year’s Day baby was born at Miami Valley Hospital, said Julie Scanlan, a nurse manager.

“It’s always exciting to have that and have that notoriety,” she said. The hospital typically handles more than 5,000 births a year.

Nearly 45 minutes later, Montgomery County welcomed a second New Year’s newborn when 29-year-old Amber Weaver, a Germantown kindergarten teacher, gave birth to a son, Spencer, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Dayton.

“His big brother was a tax day baby, so it was kind of neat to have a New Year’s baby now,” Amber Weaver said.

She and her husband, Daniel, a 30-year-old skilled trades craftsman, live in New Lebanon, with their son Jackson, age 2.

Southview Medical Center in Centerville reported its first New Year’s birth, a boy, at 8:54 a.m., a hospital spokeswoman said. Telles and Melissa Morgan of Fairborn are the parents of Telles Morgan Jr.

Kettering Medical Center in Kettering reported the birth of a boy at 12:22 p.m. Matthew and Felicia Wheeler of Miami Twp. are the parents of Liam Wheeler, a hospital spokeswoman said.
