DARKE COUNTY — The fatal crash involving a local youth pastor punctuated a dangerous 24-hour period on Darke County roads between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Two crashes were recorded Tuesday on U.S. 127.

The first crash occurred at the Hollansburg-Arcanum Road intersection and resulted in the death of 52-year-old Brian Delk of New Madison. Delk was hit and killed by 34-year-old Corinne S. Abou of Arcanum. She failed to yield at a stop sign, deputies said.

Delk served as pastor of student ministries at the Castine Church of the Brethren. Senior Pastor Greg Hyre said the funeral will be at the church.

“Brian grew up in this church and was here most of his life,” Hyre said.

A second crash at a Sebring-Warner Road intersection resulted in three people sent to Miami Valley Hospital by helicopters. A preliminary investigation showed a minivan, driven by 89-year-old Rollin H. Ary of Greenville, was traveling east on Sebring-Warner Road when his car was struck on the passenger side by a car driven by 71-year-old Sue A. Poling of Hollansburg, who was headed northbound on U.S. 127.

Ary was listed in fair condition Wednesday and Poling was listed in serious condition. Ary’s wife, Lois, 87, also was listed in serious condition.

A third crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday. Jared Swafford, 18, of West Milton was leaving the Pak-a-Sak gas station on Ohio 49 when he pulled out and his SUV collided with a truck driven by 24-year-old Adam Rex of Laura.

Rex refused treatment by rescue crews, but Swafford had to be extricated from his vehicle. He was listed in good condition on Wednesday.
