3,400 DP&L customers without power

Staff Report

DAYTON — Dayton Power & Light crews have achieved their goal to restore power to 95 percent of area customers who have been out since an ice storm Tuesday and high winds Wednesday.

About 3,400 DP&L customers were still without power as of 11p.m. today.

The majority of those outages are in Oakwood, Kettering and Beavercreek.

“Individual outages and those that require extensive repairs may take longer,” according to company officials.

While DP&L continues to work around the clock to restore service, Time Warner Cable Southwest Ohio said it has about 8,000 subscribers in the Miami Valley without service today.

DP&L officials are encouraging those who do not have power, but have neighbors who do, to report their outage at 1-877-4OUTAGE (1-877-468-8243).

“If you report that your power is out, we call you back. We believe we have restored your power. If this is not the case, please call us,” said Lesley Sprigg, DP&L’s director of corporate communications.

The outage left several intersections without traffic lights. For example, traffic lights still were out at the intersection of Denlinger Road and Shiloh Springs Road in Trotwood as of 5:30 a.m. Portable stop signs have been set up.

DP&L officials are encouraging those who have lost power in their homes to unplug all appliances to avoid accidental fires when power is restored.

The utility company said, “A good practice is to always ensure there are no papers or other flammable materials on top of your electric range, in case it is accidently turned on.”

DP&L officials encourage those who are using portable heaters and generators to follow all manufacturers’ instructions and think safety first. The company said, “One of the most important precautions is to ensure that you have proper ventilation for this type of equipment. Keep generators far from your home (your porch is too close).”

The update also said, “do not use a kerosene heater or gas logs for heat unless you have a working carbon monoxide alarm. An alarm is also important to have when running a generator near your home.”

DP&L currently has mutual assistance crews from Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky, Tennessee and Cincinnati to assist them with ice storm damage repairs. DP&L crews are working 16-hour shifts, with 8 hours off, according to Mary Beth Weaver, a company spokeswoman.

The DP&L Foundation made a $20,000 contribution to the Red Cross this week to assist with food and shelter for DP&L customers in the Miami Valley who are without power. DP&L serves more than 500,000 customers in 24 southwest Ohio counties.

The sheer number of damaged lines in neighborhoods and leading to individual homes meant DP&L couldn’t say for sure when the last of its customers would have power.

Tuesday night, the number of customers without power totaled 80,000, Nickel said.

DP&L serves 500,000 customers across 24 counties, from Wapakoneta to Springboro, and from the Indiana line to the Columbus area.

DP&L is encouraging their customers to stay away from downed power lines.
