Former Montgomery County judge and 2013 candidate for Dayton mayor A.J. Wagner will now represent the Dayton region on the Ohio Board of Education.

Gov. John Kasich’s office announced Wagner’s appointment Monday evening.

Wagner will assume the 3rd district seat on Aug. 4, and must run in November 2014 to retain the seat for the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2017.

The 3rd district on the state Board of Education includes Montgomery, Preble, Darke, Miami and Butler counties.

The state school board decides policies that impact all children in a public school in Ohio. The board also approves curriculum and will play a key role in the implementation of new statewide testing this year.

Wagner served as a Montgomery County Common Pleas Court judge and as county auditor. He lost a race of Dayton mayor last year to Nan Whaley.

Wagner is replacing Jeffery J. Mims, Jr., who resigned the seat to become a Dayton City commissioner.
