CAMBRIDGE, Mass. —
A man convicted in 2008 of sexual imposition and public indecency for attacking a Sinclair Community College student in a stairwell has been arrested on a fugitive warrant in Massachusetts.
Nicholas Rossi, who now goes by Nicholas Alahverdian, was arrested by Harvard University police on Nov. 9 after a bench warrant for failure to appear was issued in Dayton on Oct. 2.
Rossi, 25, has been working as a lobbyist for reforming the Rhode Island Department of Children, Youth and Families and studying at the Ivy League school, according to online records that include his own blog. He is not listed in the Harvard University directory.
Rossi testified before the Rhode Island legislature that he was abused as a child while he was a ward of the state. He has also filed a lawsuit against the state’s department of children, youth and families.
In 2008, he was a student at Sinclair when he was convicted of two misdemeanor sex offenses in Dayton Municipal Court and sentenced to community service and counseling. His sentence also stipulated that he must register as a Tier I sex offender. His victim was an adult.
Wednesday, Andy Sexton, assistant prosecutor for the City of Dayton, said Rossi’s sentence was stayed while he appealed his conviction and asked for a new trial.
“He has exhausted all of his appeals,” Sexton said. Rossi was supposed to appear in Dayton for a status hearing on Sept. 26 to discuss reinstating his sentence, but he did not show up. The warrant for his arrest was then issued.
“We are concerned about the fact that he has not registered,” Sexton said.
According to a spokeswoman for the Middlesex Massachusetts District Attorney’s Office, Rossi was arraigned Tuesday and is being held without bail.
Sexton said Rossi waived his extradition hearing, giving local authorities 10 days to go get him.
