Bush pushes business plan in support of Romney

HAMILTON —

Former Fla. Gov. Jeb Bush said Mitt Romney’s practical business experience made him the best candidate to “restore America to greatness.”

Bush, the son of former president George H.W. Bush and brother of George W. Bush, addressed Romney supporters on Monday at United Performance Metals in Hamilton.

Under a Romney presidency, the Keystone XL oil pipeline would be approved on Day One, hydraulic fracking and horizontal drilling would be more strongly encouraged and “21st century regulations” would be implemented that are “less onerous, less punitive and achieve a better result at a lower cost,” Bush said.

Bush criticized Obama for remarks he made Friday while campaigning in Virginia

“He said … ‘If you’ve got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen,’” Bush said. “That was kind of like saying the private sector is doing pretty good, it’s the economy that’s doing bad.

Lis Smith, a national spokeswoman for the Obama campaign, said the president’s remarks were taken out of context and that he referenced public services that protect and enable business owners to be successful.

“Mitt Romney’s campaign has already gone off the deep end today in an attempt to once again change the storyline away from his Bain tenure and investments in foreign tax havens and offshore accounts,” Smith said Tuesday. “As President Obama said the other day, those who start businesses succeed because of their individual initiative – their drive, hard work, and creativity. But there are critical actions we must take to support businesses and encourage new ones – that means we need the best infrastructure, a good education system, and affordable, domestic sources of clean energy. Those are investments we make not as individuals, but as Americans, and our nation benefits from them. Apparently Mitt Romney disagrees.”

Kathy Zeller of Cincinnati said she came to hear Bush speak to hear another Republican’s viewpoints and to understand why he’s supporting Romney. “This is a turning point for our country for us to regain our enthusiasm for business,” she said. “There has to be a change and I think that’s what really struck home.”
