SPRINGFIELD —

A group of Springfield residents will be ringing in the new year away from their home, after a fire displaced them today.

At about 6 p.m., firefighters were called to the 1600 block of East Street, where 911 callers reported seeing a house on fire.

"There were heavy flames in the laundry room and the front room when we arrived," said Springfield Fire and Rescue Batallion Chief Randy Keifer at the scene.

Keifer said three adults and four children lived in the home but they will be spending New Year's Eve someplace else.

"We put the fire out quickly but there was heavy damage with the fire and smoke," he said.

No one was injured in the blaze.

Initial reports indicated the fire may have started in the laundry room but officials could not yet establish the official cause.

The American Red Cross is helping the residents, Keifer said they will likely be displaced for at least a few days.
