A worker at Franklin Yards suffered minor injuries Thursday when he was splashed with liquid acid while off-loading the substance from a tanker.

The worker, whose name was not released, was treated at the scene of the spill, Franklin Yards Logistic Park at 1200 S. Main St., but was taken to Atrium Hospital as a precaution, Franklin Fire Chief Jonathan Westendorf told News Center 7.

Fire/rescue crews were dispatched sometime after 3:30 p.m. on a report of a injured subject splashed with an acid, Westendorf said. A truck driver who was delivering what he said was liquid acid told News Center 7 that the worker was sprayed with the liquid, apparently from a hose.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the incident involved a minor release of some kind of liquid acid from over-pressurization. The worker was being treated at the scene when fire crews arrived, being flushed with a large amount of water, Westendorf said.

The worker should not suffer any long-lasting effects, Westendorf said of the injuries he described as minor and not life threatening.

Neither OHSA nor HAZMAT was not called, Westendorf said, but fire crews did consult with HAZMAT to make sure all the bases were covered.

“It seems to be a very minor incident,” he said.

Rod Good, owner of the Good Family of Companies (of which Franklin Yards is a subsidiary) said the spill was less than 5 gallons. “We decided to air on the side of caution” and called in the fire department, he said.

Good said to his understanding, the incident occurred when there was a rush of air through a hose as the liquid was being off-loaded from a tanker to a holding tank on the property.

Good wouldn’t say whether the spill involved any kind of acid, explaining that a non-disclosure clause with the companies he does business with didn’t allow him to identify what was spilled.
