HUBER HEIGHTS —

Despite a state deadline to submit a cost-reduction plan by year’s end to address finances, the Huber Heights Board of Education will not meet again until early January.

On Thursday, the board voted to table the district’s plan that would have reduced district expenses by $6.3 million, eliminated 108 staff positions and all athletics and extracurricular activities. The district plans to have a 9.95-mill levy on the May 2013 ballot. Voters have defeated requests for new funds since 2005, most recently in November.

President Mark Combs said the board will meet in executive session to discussion personnel negotiations and other issues before its next scheduled regular meeting Jan. 10.

“We are also formulating a letter we will send to Ohio Department of Education by Dec. 31. Along with that, we will submit a request to sit down with a state consultant-analyst to better understand where we are and what actions we need to take,” he said.

“We would like to get a little more time to see if we can look at potential sources of revenue as well as cuts, because cuts are not going to be enough to solve this.”

District treasurer Ann Bernardo said missing the Dec. 31 deadline might prompt the state to declare an emergency and appoint a commission to oversee finances.

Without the cuts and revenue from the levy, projections show Huber Heights Schools operating in deficit by 2014.
