For Todd Mikesell fly fishing is a family event. His father taught him the sport, and the family tradition of visiting a cabin for four days the same weekend every year has expanded to its third generation.

“I started fly fishing 30 years ago,” Mikesell said. “It’s always been a hobby of mine. I take my sons up (to Michigan and Lake Erie.)”

Mikesell’s hobby turned into a business when he opened ReelFlyFish.com in 2006.

“ReelFlyRod.com was started as an Internet-based company,” Mikesell said. “As it grew we realized the need for a walk-in fly shop for local customers. We started Sugar Creek Fly Shop.”

The two businesses operate from the same location, with Sugar Creek Fly Shop opening earlier this year.

“Fly fishing is one of the most relaxing, enjoyable sports that places you in some of the most beautiful places on earth,” Mikesell said. “There are a lot of people who are interested in learning more, but it can be intimidating because it’s a technical sport. We’re here to shorten the learning curve.”

What the business does: “We are first and foremost a fly fishing specialty shop, and we stock all things fly fishing. For the local customer, we’re a resource for fly casting lessons, professional guided trips to southern Ohio and anything you need for fly fishing.”

What makes the business stand out: “We win at the customer service game. We do things that others are not willing to do. We offer a full service from introducing someone to the sport, to education and outfitting them.”

How the business started: “It was purely an accident. I started buying and selling some gear to support my hobby, and it took off. It took us three or four years before we were one of the largest dealers in the country.”

Interesting fact: “We have shipped fly fishing gear to over 120 countries.”

Upcoming goals: “Long term we want to create a hosted travel business, where we host guided trips.”
