GERMAN TWP. —

A German Twp. firefighter and police officer accused of rape pleaded not guilty to the charge Thursday.

Robert E. Oldham, 30, of 1407 Kingsgate Road, is a lieutenant with the German Twp. fire department and also with the Mechanicsburg Fire Department in Champaign County. He works one day a week as a volunteer with the German Twp. police department. A warrant on one count of felony rape was issued for Oldham on Tuesday by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, which is handling the investigation.

According to a probable cause affidavit filed in Clark County Municipal Court, the sheriff’s office on Sunday received a complaint of a sexual assault from the woman. She told deputies that on Saturday she went to a party at a residence on Penny Pike, where she said she consumed alcohol.

She told investigators that she felt tired after the drinks and started walking upstairs with the assistance of two juveniles. Oldham allegedly approached her and said he would take care of her. Once upstairs, the woman told detectives Oldham allegedly sexually assaulted her, despite her protests.

There was no information included with the court papers that indicated who hosted the party or whether Oldham knows the woman he is accused of assaulting.

Oldham was arraigned in Clark County Municipal Court on Thursday. His attorney, John Butz, did not argue against the recommendation that bond be set at $10,000. Oldham posted that bond, according to court records.

German Twp. has placed Oldham on paid administrative leave for 15 days. After that, trustees will review the case, said fire Capt. Chad Eubanks.

Eubanks said Oldham has been with the fire department for 15 years, starting as a cadet. He said he’s never had any issues.

“I’ve known Robbie since he’s been here as a kid. He was probably 14 or 15 when he started,” Eubanks said. “Robbie’s a great firefighter and a good EMT.”

Friends and family of Oldham who came to his arraignment declined to comment. Eubanks said he would not discuss the charge, but said he hopes the case does not cast a negative light on the department.

“Everybody’s human and sometimes things happen,” he said. “But it does not reflect on this department.”
