PIQUA —

A Piqua High School student crashed into a house Thursday afternoon just hours after earning his driver’s permit.

The 18-year-old male was driving home from school with his mother after receiving his driver’s permit earlier in the day, police Lt. Rick Byron said.

The teenager, at a two-way stop at Park Avenue and Westview Drive, attempted a left turn onto Westview and was not able to maintain control of the Ford Focus. He crashed into a home at 1901 Park Ave.

According to Byron, two-thirds of the car ended up in the living room. The elderly woman who lives there was in her bedroom and was not injured.

The teenager did not suffer any injuries. His mother suffered a minor hand injury. She did not require a trip to a hospital.

The teenager was cited for failure to control a motor vehicle, said Byron, who blamed the accident on “inexperience.”

He offered this advice: “It is important for new drivers to know all the controls and buttons. They need time behind the wheel without driving. When it is time for them to drive for the first time, take new drivers to an empty parking lot first.”
