The Huber Heights public works committee and city manager Jim Borland are working together to determine whether the city should move to a single hauler for trash services.

The city currently has multiple trash hauling services. Residents said they were concerned about safety, noise and the amount of traffic in residential areas with multiple trash haulers visiting at different times during the week, and the city soon started examining the issue.

Nearly 600 people participated to a survey in August designed to gauge citizen feedback about their current trash and recycling services. About 30 people attended a town hall meeting on Sept. 19, and most supported a single trash hauler.

“No one present expressed any statement against the idea (at the town hall meeting),” said Tony Rodgers, clerk of council. “People had questions, but there were no outright objections.”

The city is continuing to explore options.

“The next step is for the city manager to put together a feasibility study based on the input so far, and create a recommendation for a bid package for contractors,” said Karen Kaleps, chair of the public works committee and city council representative for Ward 2.

The goal is to complete the study and return the issue to the public works committee in mid-October. The issue will be open to the public for discussion again at that point.
