Group: Kettering Fairmont High School’s marching band

What: Competed at the Tipp City Invitational Sept. 15, earning first place in the AA class, overall best visual, overall best general effect and overall best music. The band was the overall grand champion band for the highest point total in the competition. The band also competed at the Centerville Invitational on Oct. 27, earning first place in the open class, best music and best overall percussion.

How did it go?: “They just continue to get better through the year,” director Michael Berning said. “Competition for the arts can be fairly subjective, so we compete against ourselves and improve every week.”

What was the best part?: “Seeing things progress from week to week, and seeing the kids work harder to get better,” Berning said. “We have 216 kids in the band; they’re a great group of kids.”
