Man gets 15 years to life in death of toddler

DAYTON —

A man who abused and killed a 2-year-old boy was sentenced to 15 years to life in prison Tuesday.

Joe Watson, 27, was given the sentence for causing the death of Levi Barrett, who died last year at Good Samaritan Hospital minutes after being transported there by medics.

Watson was the boyfriend of Barrett’s mother. His death was ruled a homicide by blunt force trauma.

Barrett’s mother, Michelle Mooty, was charged with permitting abuse.

At Tuesday’s sentencing Judge Frances McGee told the family she holds them responsible for the boy’s death, and that none of them stepped in and saved Barrett from the abuse.
