Miamisburg to host first Volunteer Showcase

City of Miamisburg Human Resources Director Kathy Weisgarber and Recreation Superintendent Debbie McLaughlin share responsibilities for the city’s volunteer program.

When they realized their volunteer resources had declined while demand was increasing, they developed the idea of a jobs fair to make citizens aware of volunteer opportunities. The first Volunteer Showcase will be held March 21.

The city utilizes volunteers for office support in several departments, and project support for parks and facilities and recreation programs and events.

“Realizing that several agencies in the community are in the same position, they decided to invite them to participate,” said Kim Winter, Miamisburg’s Recreation Superintendent.

The Volunteer Showcase will be a “one-stop” opportunity for citizens to learn about numerous volunteer opportunities in Miamisburg.

“Each agency we invited was very interested and joined,” said McLaughlin. “The agencies indicated they need more volunteers to fill vacancies in services. Part of the concept of inviting other agencies is that more people would attend if they knew they could learn about opportunities available from several agencies.”

Among enthusiastic agency respondents was Sycamore Medical Center.

“While the Sycamore Volunteer Program is quite active and robust, we are always seeking compassionate and caring individuals who can assist in assignments such as supplies delivery, escorting patients, and shuttle driving here at the hospital,” said Carol Hangen, Coordinator of Customer Service and Volunteers at Sycamore.

Other participating agencies include the Miamisburg City School District, the Miamisburg Public Library, PipeStone and Mound Golf Courses, Five Rivers MetroParks and ONE Bistro.

The Volunteer Showcase will be held in the commons of the Miamisburg Middle School, 8668 Miamisburg-Springboro Road, on Thursday, March 21 from 3:30-6:30 p.m. For more information, call Miamisburg Parks and Recreation at 866-4532 or visit www.PlayMiamisburg.com.
