SUGARCREEK TWP., Greene County — The 19-year-old man whose dramatic car crash on Interstate 675 was caught on camera did not have evidence of alcohol or drugs in his body, the Ohio State Highway Patrol has determined.
Brennan Eden’s vehicle went into the median, hit a guardrail and went airborne into an overpass column at Wagner Road about 7:15 a.m. Aug. 23.
The impact caused Eden, 19, of Mason, to be ejected and his car to break apart.
Eden survived the crash. He was listed in fair condition in Miami Valley Hospital as of 7 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 2.
Hospital blood tests came back negative for alcohol and drugs, Sgt. Jon Cross of the state patrol’s Xenia Post said Wednesday.
Troopers did not provide an estimate of Eden’s speed at the time of the crash, and Cross said the investigation continues.
A Sugarcreek Twp. police cruiser, on routine duty, caught the crash on camera, and the video has been played on newscasts and websites around the country.
Beavercreek police released Eden from custody roughly 20 minutes before the crash, which closed the southbound lanes of I-675 for five hours.
Beavercreek police said they had arrested Eden at 6:13 a.m. Aug. 23 on charges including possession of alcohol, drug paraphernalia and drug abuse after officers said he was found with a 15-year-old Beavercreek girl in the parking lot near the corner of Beaver Vu Drive and North Fairfield Road.
The officer approached the vehicle because it was in the parking lot of a closed business at such an early hour. The officer found an unopened can of alcohol, a trace of marijuana and drug paraphernalia in the car.
The girl was cited and released to her father. Eden was given a court summons and released.
“It’s police procedure not to incarcerate people on a prohibition (charge),” Beavercreek Sgt. Jim Wuebben said the day after the crash.
Eden apparently told the Beavercreek officer that he had not been drinking or had taken any drugs.
“Eden was cooperative throughout, and there were no indications of Eden to be under the influence of alcohol at the time of his arrest,” Aug. 23, Wuebben said.
