Rail advocates say the 3-C Corridor will put Ohio — and Dayton — on the map as passenger rail service throughout the Midwest is expanded and upgraded into a high-speed network.

For now, Ohio’s “Quick Start” plan calls for using federal stimulus money for conventional passenger service along a 260-mile route between Cincinnati and Cleveland.

Trains will reach speeds of 80 mph and complete the route in about four to six hours.

Here’s what the plan means for Dayton area residents:

• Two stops — one in downtown Dayton, a second in Riverside — are planned.
• Three trains a day will leave Dayton for Cincinnati or Columbus and two will go on to Cleveland.
• Fares will be about $7 for the one-way trip from Dayton to Cincinnati and about $10.50 one-way to Columbus.
• A $5.7 million station at Sixth and Ludlow streets will include a new waiting and ticketing area underneath the tracks, a clock tower or other prominent marker at Sixth and Main streets and a covered pedestrian walkway and drop-off zone along Sixth Street.
• A $500,000 terminal and platform will be built in Riverside across from the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force.

Riverside officials expect the train stop to draw $50 million in new investment to the surrounding 4-acre site, including a hotel and restaurant.
