MONROE —

A suspected intoxicated driver now faces charges of child endangering and drug abuse after a traffic stop in Monroe earlier this week.

Around 1:20 p.m. Wednesday, Monroe police received reports of an intoxicated driver with children stopped at McDonald’s, in the area of New Garver and Hamilton Lebanon roads. Officers spotted a vehicle matching the description — a 1995 Ford Aerostar — at a stop light at New Garver Road and Ohio 63.

A traffic stop was made after the driver — identified as Shane M. Bunch, 25, of the 5000 block of Wayne Milford Road in Wayne Twp. — traveled east onto Ohio 63 and then onto Interstate 75 South, police reports indicate.

Inside the van with Bunch were a 17-year-old boy, a 5-year-old girl, and a 4-year-old boy. Police discovered an active protection order out of Lexington, Ky. for the two youngest children.

Responding officers said Bunch appeared unsteady on his feet during field sobriety tests and had glassy bloodshot eyes and slurred speech. Officers allegedly recovered from Bunch’s pants pockets a plastic bag with six grams of marijuana and two small plastic containers, one with 11 Xanax pills and one with a single Suboxone pill.

“During transport to the (police department), Bunch fell asleep within minutes and was acting very lethargic,” Officer Adam Binder reported. “He was also unable to stay awake during transport to Butler County Jail.”

During an inventory of the vehicle, officers reportedly recovered a wooden box containing two marijuana grinders, a pill bottle containing seven marijuana roaches, a glass pipe with marijuana residue, rolling papers, and two orange cut straws with white powder residue.

Bunch was charged with three counts of child endangering, two counts of protection order violation and two counts of drug abuse. Bunch was also cited for OVI, driving under suspension, expired plates, fictitious tags, and drug paraphernalia. He will appear at 8 a.m. July 31 in Butler County Area III court.

Bunch also has a prior OVI conviction from 2010, according to Hamilton Municipal Court records.

Five days prior to Bunch’s arrest with Monroe police, the suspect was picked up by West Chester Twp. police July 20 for an outstanding warrant for failure to comply in Hamilton. Bunch was the passenger in a vehicle stopped for a traffic violation at Kingsgate Way and Tylersville Road.
