DAYTON —

A 23-year-old man was arrested by Dayton Police on suspicion of carrying a concealed weapon and trespassing, after residents at an apartment complex reported that he was walking around the area with a gun.

Police got the call at about 10:15 p.m. Sunday and responded to the Hilltop Homes apartments, 3000 Haberer Ave. The caller said a man was walking around the complex with a gun in his hand and that he had set a building on fire. Responding firefighters did not locate any fire, but as police entered the complex, they observed a man running from them, according to a police incident report.

The report states that as an officer exited his cruiser, he observed the suspect toss something on the ground. The object was discovered to be a loaded semi-automatic pistol.

The suspect, identified as Orlando Thomas Jr., was taken into custody. He told officers that someone attempted to rob him, but he was able to grab the gun and run away with it. He said he kept running when police arrived because he didn’t want them to shoot him, according to the report.

Thomas was booked into the Montgomery County Jail pending charges of carrying a concealed weapon and criminal trespassing because he was previous banned from all Greater Dayton Premier Management properties, and the complex on Haberer is owned by GDPM.
