Residents get first look at city's growth plan

XENIA — Area residents will get a first look Monday at the draft of the plan city officials will use as a decision making road map for years to come.

“It’s a long-range comprehensive plan,” city planner Brian R. Forschner said of the $50,000 project dubbed X-plan. “It is also going to be very strategic in guiding things we can do in the short term to make our community better.”

X-Plan is being developed by a consultant and city staff.

An X-Plan Public Workshop is set for Monday. Online input will be accepted July 23 through Aug. 23 at www.ci.xenia.oh.us.

Click on the ‘X-Plan’ tab, “More,’ and then “Virtual Meeting.”

“This is just a draft, so it is open for change,” Forschner said. “We are trying to get the community to help with the plan.”

The plan includes strategies that aim to spur economic growth, improve neighborhoods, revitalize downtown and make Xenia a “community of choice” in the region and for residents.

“It’s a mix of new ideas and ideas that have been out there for a long time that nobody has been able to get going,” Forschner said. “There are a number of recommendations to update the zoning code — how to streamline regulations to make Xenia more business-friendly and more community-friendly.”

This is the first plan of its kind in Xenia.

The city last developed a land use plan in the mid-90s, Forschner said.

Xenia Mayor Marsha J. Bayless said the draft is the result of community involvement.

“It will be a plan that as a community, we can say we did,” she said.

All told, Forschner said about 500 Xenia residents contributed to the project through public meetings, a high school class project, an online discussion, and a phone survey conducted with the help of Wright State University.
