St. Paris police discover marijuana operation

St. Paris police officers took four individuals into custody Friday after discovering a marijuana-growing operation in a residence in the 200 block of Lawn Avenue.

The suspects were taken to the Tri-County Jail, St. Paris Police Chief Jim Pence Jr. said. Formal charges are pending.

Officers executed a search warrant at the residence about 10:30 a.m. Friday after receiving complaints from neighbors of suspicious traffic in the area, Pence said.

“We’ve heard a couple different complaints about selling marijuana at the house,” Pence said.

It is relatively unusual to find a growing operation within the village limits, he said.

All four of the suspects lived at the home, which Pence described as a structure similar to a pole barn with with an apartment in it.

“It’s not a typical house,” Pence said.

Officers also found a grenade inside the home, and officers from the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base bomb squad responded to the scene to deal with the device. Pence said the grenade was defused and posed no significant threat to officers but it was destroyed as a precaution.

Evidence from the scene was still being collected late Friday evening, and Pence said it is not clear how much marijuana and growing equipment was recovered from the scene.
