TROY —

A group of local vendors are bringing the taste typically associated with popular outdoor farmers’ markets to the indoors.

The Market On The Miami will hold its second Saturday morning of offerings from 9 a.m. until noon on Feb. 23 at The Tin Roof Restaurant at Treasure Island, 439 N. Elm St. It will continue through May.

The market’s first day Feb. 9 drew around 300 visitors.

Among vendors participating in the Feb. 9 market opening were Dennis and Keba Hitzeman of Innisfree Farm on Ohio 718 near Pleasant Hill. The Hitzemans’ farm specializes in pastured beef and chickens while Dennis roasts coffee and Keba is a potter.

At the market, they sell coffee, mugs, mug rugs and offer pre-orders for chickens.

“I was very pleased by both the turnout and by the sales,” Dennis Hitzeman said of the first market day. “I went in with low expectations simply because this was the first market and the first time that I am aware of anyone has tried anything like this in Troy.”

The Hitzemans decided to include Innisfree Farm at the market because most of what their businesses offer is available year round.

“Having a winter market allows us to maximize our sales in ways that a normal summer market can’t. Plus, from interactions with our customers, we got a lot of feedback that people are looking for the kinds of things the market is selling year around,” Dennis Hitzeman said.

The market is a collaboration of vendors who produce locally grown, homemade cottage foods and/or artisan items.

Tin Roof owner Craig Hughes offered the business as the market location. Hughes also participates in summer farmers’ markets, as do many of those participating in Market on the Miami. When the outdoor markets resume in warmer weather, the Market On the Miami will end.

Among locally based products for sale at the market are homemade jams, jellies, fruit butters, baked goods, gourmet roasted coffee, soaps, herbal seasoning mixes, pet treats, candy, honey, pastured chicken and quail eggs. When in season, fresh produce, herbs, flowers and garden plants will be available.

The market also offers original and reproduction art items by local artisans.
