Thousands of bicycle riders to visit Troy in June

By Nancy Bowman

TROY —

When the Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure celebrates its 25th year in June, it again will roll into Troy for two days.

City leaders Friday announced plans for the third GOBA visit at a press conference from the Tin Roof restaurant at Treasure Island, where the Great Miami River could be seen flowing in the background.

Mayor Mike Beamish promised a series of exciting activities for the estimated 2,500 riders, who will be headquartered and many camping at nearby Troy City Park. The city also hosted GOBA in 2003 and 2007.

The June 15-22 bicycle tour will start June 15 at the Champaign County Fairgrounds in Urbana, then tour part of western Ohio including Troy, Greenville, New Bremen and Sidney before returning to Urbana June 22.

The riders average 50 miles per day on the road, then spend time visiting local attractions and businesses.

In planning the 25th anniversary ride, organizers wanted to spend time in special places, and had no trouble including Troy, said Julie Van Winkle, GOBA director. The city “has been over the top” every time GOBA has visited, she said.

About 75 percent of GOBA participants are from Ohio, but they also come from across the country and beyond, Van Winkle said.

Many details of the visit remain to be finalized. Planning for the June 16 evening has been assumed by members of the Tom and Bev Kendall family of Troy.

Kendall, a city councilman, said he has been involved in the previous GOBA visits and wanted to help show off the community, including the area along the river. Among activities in the works, a concert by the river by Hotel California, an Eagles tribute band and food.
