Trotwood Community Garden now accepting registration for garden plots

TROTWOOD —

There is nothing quite like the fresh, sweet taste of homegrown vegetables. Unfortunately, growing your own vegetables requires yard space that many would-be gardeners do not have as well as the exhausting job of preparing the garden plot for planting.

The Trotwood Community garden solves both of those problems and is now accepting registration for pre-tilled garden plots. Each plot provides 10 by 20 feet of space which can be reserved for $30 for the whole growing season. Trotwood Parks and Recreation Specialist Terry M. Lodge said that the tilling and often times seeds are provided courtesy of Five Rivers MetroParks. Lodge said that many gardeners do however bring their own seeds and he has seen everything from vegetable to flower gardens.

Gardeners are still responsible for watering, weeding, pest control and harvesting of their plot.

Lodge said that the Trotwood Community Garden began in 2008 when the city acquired the site located at 118 S. Broadway St. which was formerly used by the Boys Baseball Association. He said that the city had originally planned to combine the gardens with a cultural heritage center which never materialized.

In 2011 the management of the gardens was transferred to the Trotwood-Madison Band Boosters as a way for them to generate funds for the Trotwood-Madison High School Band.

“The involvement of the Band Boosters was a result of a discussion between city officials and representatives of the band boosters as to how the city could assist the band boosters in raising funds,” said Lodge.

Lodge said that registration for plots is open now.

To secure a plot, contact Brenda Murphy at 750-5812 or Mike Finley at 239-9010. There is also an official reregistration which must be filled out and can be obtained through the Trotwood-Madison Band Boosters or by stopping by the Trotwood Government Center located at 3035 Olive Road.

Lodge said there is no deadline to register but that those who participated the year prior would be given a “grace period” allowing them the opportunity to have the same plot that they had the year before.
