White Castle eyes Vandalia for processing plant

VANDALIA – White Castle plans to build a food processing plant in Stonequarry Crossings, becoming the third private business and fifth entity in the 200-acre plat across National Road from Dayton International Airport.

The agreement, which is contingent on proposed tax incentives, will come up for authorization by the Ohio Tax Credit Authority on Monday.

Last week, officials from White Castle – who did not reveal their company’s name – spoke at a Vandalia City Council meeting and said they were happy to be building in the city.

White Castle, founded by cook Walter Anderson and insurance man Billy Ingram in Wichita, Kan., in 1921, is headquartered in Columbus. There is one White Castle restaurant in the Dayton area at 5201 Salem Bend in Trotwood.

The facility would employ about 120 workers by 2017, according to Vandalia’s application for Montgomery County ED/GE (Economic Development/Government Equity) funds earlier this year. The city sought $300,000 county ED/GE funds to go toward the project.

The company intends to construct a building of more than 83,000 square feet on nearly 17 acres of land east of the Dayton International Airport access road, west of Peters Pike and south of Hertlein Lane.

The project will take a total investment of $22.5 million over four years in two phases, according to the city’s outline of the development. The initial phase is estimated at $18.3 million, which will include $5.6 million in capital equipment.

The ED/GE application puts the average salary of jobs to be created at $35,155 by 2017.

Stonequarry Crossings is Vandalia’s business park for professional office, high technology, manufacturing and other uses. The White Castle facility would be near Carter Logistics to the north.

Construction would begin in the fall of 2012, with completion in the summer of 2013, according to the city.

According to Vandalia’s application, JobsOhio, the state’s private economic development arm may provide assistance through a loan and the Ohio Enterprise Bond Fund.

A JobsOhio spokeswoman said she could not immediately comment.
