KETTERING, Ohio —

We are learning more about the conversation Erica Baker's grandmother had with the only person ever convicted in the 9-year-old girl's disappearance.

On Thursday, Christian Gabriel was released from jail and Pam Schmidt picked him up and gave him a ride home so they could talk.

"It was quite shocking," said Misty Baker who has been waiting for news of her missing daughter since 1999.

Baker said she had no idea that her mother, Pam Schmidt would give Gabriel a ride home from jail.

Baker said, "I seen it on TV like everyone else and my mother finally called me."

Schmidt said that when it comes to Erica, Gabriel said his mind is blank.

"He said he was very sorry for what happened that night but unfortunately, he doesn't remember," said Baker. "To know he doesn't remember is very disappointing and kind of heartbreaking."

Erica, who was 9 at the time, went missing while walking her dog in Kettering.

Christian Gabriel and his friends, allegedly high on drugs, were the last people to see her alive.

Baker said, "She was walking her dog along the road by the school. She was hit by the van and they picked her up and disposed of her body. Unfortunately, he doesn't remember that."

Misty said she would like to see Christian Gabriel undergo hypnosis. She also hopes that being out of prison will help him remember the past.

"We're hoping with some time, he drives by somewhere and it will trigger his memory and he will help us," Baker said.

However, for the first time, Erica's relatives heard something from Gabriel that they had never heard before.

"Just that he was sorry. He's never said that before. I think that's a big step in the right direction," Misty said.

Erica's birthday was this week and she would have been 22 year's old.

Her mother said she won't have closure until they can find her remains and bring her home.

Baker said, "I'm not in it for justice. I'm in it for Erica. I just want to bring Erica home."
