MIDDLETOWN —

No citations will be issued in the 52-vehicle pileup last month on Interstate 75 in Middletown.

A Jan. 21 snow squall that caused “white-out” conditions and slick road also hindered investigation of the chain of events in the massive crash, according to the Ohio Highway Patrol.

“Because of the snow and the conditions, there were no lane lines, no skid marks and no witnesses,” said Sgt. Scott Bierer. All of those things aid in the investigation of accidents.

“Some hit the wall; some slowed down, slid into other lanes and then were hit by someone else, who may have been pushed there by another vehicle,” Bierer said.

The crash injured 10 people and also involved two semi trucks. No citations will be issued due to the circumstances.

Bierer said it is unusual for troopers not to be able to piece together what happened in a crash, but the pileup on Martin Luther King Jr. Day was an exception.

“It just one of those freak things,”Bierer said.

The crash happened just before noon on southbound I-75 near the Ohio 122 exit in Middletown, scattering wreckage across the road and backing up traffic for miles. The interstate was closed for four hours while vehicles were towed away and crews treated the road.

At around the same time of the massive pileup on I-75, as many as 86 cars and trucks were colliding on I-275 near the Colerain Avenue exit. About 20 people were injured in the crash and a 12-year-old girl was killed when she got out of her car after the accident.
