OAKWOOD —
Oakwood City Schools will wait until the Nov. 5 ballot to seek a new operating tax levy.
District treasurer Kevin Philo said the district decided not to place an issue on the May ballot “because we need to see what the state of Ohio budget will be and how that will affect us.”
The Board of Elections filing deadline is Feb. 6 to have a levy on the May 7 ballot. Several other Dayton area school districts will be going before the voters then. Kettering and Centerville both announced new levies this week.
Philo said Oakwood would prefer to wait until after analyzing what the new state education funding plan includes.
“Once we do that, we’ll decide on millage. The board will act on that in June or July,” he said.
Oakwood is in the midst of a search for superintendent Mary Jo Scalzo’s successor. She has been the district’s chief executive since 2004. A list of finalists may be announced in February.
Another factor for when the schools will seek additional funding is the city of Oakwood’s 3.75-mill property tax issue, which will go before the voters on May 7.
Oakwood voters approved a 5.75-mill additional school levy in 2010 by 63 to 37 percent.
