Re “UD officials to review campus disturbance,” March 18: I think this would be a perfect time to investigate and report on how softly UD students are treated during such riots. Compare and contrast them to the much smaller Job Corps “riots” of a decade or so ago with a keen eye placed on the numbers of arrests. The UD students are coddled due to their predominate race and potential financial influence and that is truly a shame. If this same incident occurred in the middle of DeSoto Bass, would it have been handled in the same way? One arrest? No way.
One student said: “We were out there trying to have fun. The cops caused the crowd to go a little bit bananas.” It’s amazing, telling and typical; they weren’t at fault, the cops were. In my work world, UD was reputed to be just a party school. Wonder why?
The university said they scheduled a number of non-alcohol-related St. Patty day events, such as bowling, trivia, and a pancake and egg dinner to provide alternatives for the students. Though I do not condone what they did, with alternatives such as these, I would have gone crazy, too.
Kiefaber Street looks similar to those in Benghazi or Cairo, Egypt, after riots or bombs going off. And then a student says they just wanted to have “fun.” Perhaps UD should require a course on fun. This type of “fun” is just what a Catholic institution doesn’t need.
I hate traffic cams; they make me paranoid. They don’t take into account extenuating circumstances. There is just a picture. A traffic cop would take the whole situation into account. You cannot question a camera in court. It’s hard to remember a violation when you get the ticket one to two months later. How do you know if they are operating properly? How much business do they run off? Nothing puts me more in the mood to shop than getting a $100 traffic ticket. Take them all out.
I don’t understand why suicide is unlawful. This should be a personal thing not to be legislated. The point of all this SWAT team intervention and the multitudes of police presence are ridiculous. Why not spend all these monies on treatment for the sick one? Sometimes these folks are looking for “suicide by police.”
