MIAMISBURG —

When Springboro resident Kim Hughes isn’t on the job in human resources at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, or working in her home nest, she’s at Robyn’s Nest in Miamisburg, an animal rescue organization.

“I met owner Robyn McGeorge at a pet event, and knew she always needed volunteers,” said Hughes.

Since that meeting two years ago, Hughes spends time at the center every week.

“I do anything, from sweeping, grooming and feeding, to doing spreadsheets and working the counter,” she said. “I was always bringing animals home when I was a kid, but my parents wouldn’t let me keep them. I was a foster at Robyn’s, too, but we adopted the dog and already had two, so I don’t foster anymore. You just fall in love with them when they’re in your home.”

Her favorite job at Robyn’s is working special events.

“I love the events – it might be a walk or a fundraiser, where we set up a tent, do micro-chipping and sell dog and cat stuff,” she said.

Currently, Robyn’s has 12 cats, five gerbils, a ferret, chinchilla, rat and a mouse. “All the dogs are fostered out,” said Hughes.

She even gets her husband, Charlie, and son, Joey, in on the act.

“Charlie helps at the annual spaghetti dinner fundraiser, and Joey went with me all the time when I started,” she said. “He’s a freshman this year, and when he’s a senior he has to do 30 hours of community service and will do it at Robyn’s.

“Kim really cares about the rescue and takes her volunteer work very seriously,” said rescue founder McGeorge. “We have about 50 volunteers, but only 10 are here on a regular basis.”

Anyone interested in volunteering or becoming a foster parent at Robyn’s Nest, 130 North Main St. in Miamisburg, can fill out a volunteer form on her website, http://www.robynsnestrescue.com, or call 937-247-9272.
