Two fraud suspects arrested

Alleged ringleader in custody in Florida, officials say.

Columbus — Two more suspected members of a multistate telemarketing fraud ring have been arrested, according to the Ohio Attorney General’s Office.

Over five years, a Miami County-based telemarketing company allegedly solicited money from people who owned vacant land in undesirable locations, promising the land would be sold to wealthy investors. No land was sold and up to $4 million was taken from landowners in 41 states and the District of Columbia, according to the Miami County grand jury indictment on June 20.

The alleged ringleader, Theodore S. Thomas, 32, of Dunedin, Fla., was arrested in Florida on Sunday morning and Samuel I. Acevedo, 31, of Madison Heights, Mich., turned himself in Monday morning at the Miami County Jail.

When Thomas will appear in a Miami County court is unknown. Extradition proceedings will be held in Florida, the attorney general’s office said.

Acevedo was arraigned Monday afternoon and pleaded not guilty in Miami County Common Pleas Court. He was released on a recognizance bond. A pretrial hearing for him was scheduled for July 30.

Only two of the 18 indicted suspects remain at large: Robert B. “Ben” Salafia, 27, of Clearwater, Fla., and Michael Sweigart, 55, of St. Petersburg, Fla. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of Salafia and Sweigart should contact the Bureau of Criminal Investigation at 1-855-BCI-OHIO.

“I am pleased the ringleader of a scam that targeted vulnerable senior citizens is in custody and will face his day in court,” Ohio Attorney General Mike DeWine said in a statement Monday. “We are sending a message to con artists across this country. If you commit fraud in Ohio or upon Ohioans, law enforcement and prosecutors will not be far behind.”
