We answered your questions about SB 5

Pay is set by law, and legislators can’t vote to change own pay.

We asked readers to submit their questions about Senate Bill 5 so our reporters could answer them.

Q: If state lawmakers who passed Senate Bill 5 want us to take pay cuts, shouldn’t they lead by example and take a pay cut as well? DB, Dayton

A: State legislators are paid a base salary of $60,584, plus stipends for committee and leadership work. The pay is set by law and legislators cannot vote to change their own pay. Nonetheless, the Ohio Senate’s version of the budget bill included a 5 percent pay cut for future lawmakers, but that provision was taken out of the final version of the bill.
