Township must fill vacant trustee seat

Township trustees have until Jan. 20 to appoint replacement

BEAVERCTREEK TWP., Greene County —

Beavercreek Township trustees have less than two weeks to fill the seat of Bob Glaser, who resigned Dec. 21 following his election as Greene County commissioner.

Trustees Carol Graff and Dan Paxson have until Sunday, Jan. 20, to fill the vacancy created by Glaser’s resignation. If they fail to appoint a replacement, the decision will be up to the county probate judge.

The two, however, have not established a process to pick a successor or discussed the replacement.

“The topic has been brought up, but we do not have a specific process,” Graff said last week.

Paxson said he and Graff need to discuss the issue.

“Ms. Graff and myself need to come to an agreement on somebody,” he said. “If we can’t, it moves to the probate judge.”

Graff said she believed at least 14 people had contacted the township office, expressing an interest in serving.

State law does not specify a process, but directs trustees to “appoint a person having the qualifications of an elector.”

According to state law, if Paxton and Graff can’t agree on a successor, the decision could go to a “committee of five.” When a candidate files for office, he or she has the option of listing five people who would form a committee to choose a replacement for the candidate should he or she die before the election.

Nancy Johannes, director of the county Board of Elections, said Glaser did not establish such a committee — which means the decison would go to the judge.

It’s unclear when Graff and Paxson plan to discuss the issue. The issue is not on the agenda of today’s trustees meeting, Graff said.

Graff added that if a township resident is interested in serving, they should drop off a letter of interest and a resume with the county administrator at 1981 Dayton Xenia Rd.
