Twin Towers group focuses on curbing crime

DAYTON —

Violent crime, drug activity and prostitution are among the obstacles cited by a group of residents who are trying to make the Twin Towers neighborhood safer.

“It is completely getting worse,” said Sara Finley, Twin Towers resident and former heroin addict. “You can take two drug dealers out, but there will be five more moving in.”

Recent violent crimes have put the neighborhood in the spotlight.

Police have yet to make an arrest in the New Year’s Day homicide of 30-year-old Bradlee Thompson, who was found shot to death inside his Hulbert Street home.

Two weeks later, police arrested Demond Harris, 33, in the June 2012 killing of 25-year-old Keith Vann Moore on Xenia Avenue.

As president of the neighborhood association, Leslie Sheward is leading an effort to curb the criminal activity.

The group is building a new park and started the Youth Success Zone program. Sheward said she focuses on “empowering citizens.”

“I give them the tools that will help them take action without taking matters into their own hands,’” Sheward said.

The group is also focused on seeing criminal cases that start in their neighborhood to their end. Sheward said they’re working on a schedule to have a neighborhood representative attend the trial of Demond Harris.

“We’re going to have someone in court that will follow the case all the way through,” she said.

Harris is in the Montgomery County Jail on $1 million bond. A trial date has not been set.
