Wright-Patterson to host deer hunting to cull herd

WRIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE —

Deer hunters can take aim with bows and arrows at Wright-Patterson next month.

A random lottery will pick 65 hunters to roam near the grounds of the Twin Base Golf Course, off Ohio 444, and cull the herd, said Darryn Warner, base natural resources program manager.

The hunt will begin Nov. 4 and conclude Feb. 3. This marks the second consecutive year the base has had an archery deer hunt, he said. Last year, hunters claimed nine deer on the base.

“There still seems to be quite a few out there,” Warner said. “We’ve had a few get into areas where they’re not supposed to be in.”

A security patrol recently collided with a deer, he said.

Would-be hunters will have to take a qualification test: They must shoot three out of four arrows inside a six-inch target at 20 yards, Warner said.

Tests will be administered at the base Rod and Gun Club, Building 892, off Hebble Creek Road.

“They have to pass a qualification test and they’ll just place their name in the bucket and see if they have luck on their side,” he said.

Hunters will have to take an antlerless deer before they can shoot one with antlers, he said. Hunters are limited to claiming four deer.

Participants must have state hunting permits. The entry fee to participate in the drawing costs $10. A base hunting permit costs $15.

The hunt is only open to Wright-Patterson base identification card holders, including active-duty military, civilian employees and military retirees, officials said.

For information, call Warner at 937-257-4857.
