Oakwood, Bellbrook, Jefferson among standouts

While state report card scores generally were down this year, many districts will celebrate bright spots.

As usual, Oakwood schools stood out — ranking third in the entire state in performance index, a detailed measure of state test performance that gives more credit for the highest performers. Oakwood’s performance index was 107.7, and Bellbrook was the only other district in the core Dayton area to crack triple digits, at 100.8.

Oakwood also was the only school district in the region to earn A’s on three of the six report card components (achievement, graduation and prepared for success).

For the second year in a row, tiny Jefferson Twp. schools was the only district in the area to earn an “A” in K-3 Literacy Improvement. While Jefferson struggled in other categories, it was one of only four districts in Ohio to earn an “A” in that category.

K-3 Literacy Improvement shows what percentage of struggling readers a school gets back on track. Jefferson Superintendent Richard Gates talked earlier this year about turning Blairwood Elementary into a “literacy school,” with low student-teacher ratios and everything focused on reading.

Six local districts other than Oakwood got more than one “A” on the report card — Northmont, Bellbrook, Miamisburg, Beavercreek, Valley View and Miami East.

Showing how tough the grading was on the report card, Oakwood, Springboro and tiny Newton schools were the only districts in a five-county area to get no grade below a “C.”
