CINCINNATI — Cincinnati police officers have begun voting on a proposal by city officials for six days of unpaid leave to help close the gap in the city's budget.
The plan by the city council has to be approved by members of the Fraternal Order of Police, the union that represents officers in negotiations.
The union's president, Spec. Kathy Harrell, says she has told the city that officers oppose the furloughs. She says the city manager has suggested that the union give$1.5 million in concessions.
City officials say Cincinnati's overall shortfall could reach $20 million this year and even more next year.
Voting by police officers continues through Friday.
