WASHINGTON — Ohio's former public schools superintendent is up for a high-level position in the U.S. Department of Education.

Multiple news outlets report that the White House on Monday nominated Deborah Delisle (deh-LYL') to serve as the department's assistant secretary for elementary and secondary education.

Delisle resigned last year as Ohio superintendent under political pressure following the transition to Republican Gov. John Kasich (KAY'-sihk). She got the job while Democrat Ted Strickland was governor.

Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Ohio says in a statement that Delisle is a "remarkable public servant" who would be an asset to Education Secretary Arne (AHR'-nee) Duncan and his department.

The nomination is subject to Senate confirmation.
