Of all the questions we’ve received from readers on Issue 2, one basic question stands out. How do I vote? We’ve received this question by phone, email and on Facebook. Voters are obviously concerned about the ballot language and want to make sure their vote is accurate.
What the vote means
• A YES vote on Issue 2 would be to enact Senate Bill 5, the collective bargaining reform law passed by the Ohio Legislature and approved by Gov. John Kasich.
• A NO vote on Issue 2 would be to reject Senate Bill 5.
It also is important for voters to remember that Issue 2 on your ballot is the Senate Bill 5 referendum. Issue 5 is NOT the referendum on Senate Bill 5. Issue 5 will be a local issue and change depending on each county. Several readers have incorrectly called it Issue 5, so we wanted to make sure to clear that up. Here is the official wording of how this issue will appear on the ballot in November:
Issue 2
Referendum
A majority yes vote is necessary for Amended Substitute Senate Bill No. 5 to be approved.
Amended Substitute Senate Bill No. 5 is a new law relative to government union contracts and other government employment contracts and policies.
A “YES” vote means you approve the law.
A “NO” vote means you reject the law.
