Jobless rate decline a ‘mixed message,’ state says

COLUMBUS — Unemployment rates for September dropped both in Dayton and Montgomery County, the second straight months the rates have dipped.

The decline was mainly because of a decline in the labor force, according Brian Harter, spokesman for the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services which released the rates on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

The September rate for Montgomery County was 11 percent, down from 11.8 percent in August. For Dayton, the September rate dropped to 12 percent from 12.9 percent in August.

Harter said the decline in the Dayton area and across the state was a “mixed message.”

“People are getting frustrated and discouraged,” said Harter. “It doesn’t mean there are less people...unemployed.”

In the Dayton area, Champaign County’s 11.4 percent rate was the highest among counties. Among cities, Trotwood’s 13.1 percent rate was the highest.

Statewide, the unemployment rate in counties ranged from a low of 6.3 percent in Holmes County to 15.3 percent in Highland County. Rates for September decreased in all 88 counties.

The city and county unemployment rates are not seasonally adjusted. The state seasonally adjusted rate for September was 10.1 percent, while the seasonally unadjusted rate was 9.7 percent.

Well, I see things are changing and improving. I worked at Honda through Adecco and was laid off back in March. Since the lay offs it's been slow getting everyone back but now there are big groups going back and I finally got the call to start back Nov. 2! So things are getting better, I hope anyways, I don't want to get laid off again! Just by the number of people getting called back to Honda, the unemployment rate in this area should go down.

If you don't like being out of work, go to where there is economic growth and relative prosperity, like the Plains states, where unemployment is just over 5%, not over 12% like it is across this region. Waiting around here for manufacturing jobs to return is just wishfull thinking. We're likely to have a very slow recovery, slowed further by poor government decisions to raise taxes on everything that moves, which will only drive more jobs out of Ohio. In Ohio, there is no learning curve.

Things aren't going to get better until people go back to school and develop the skills necessary to compete in a 21st century workforce. Ohio is woefully underrepresented where college graduates are concerned, and many of those who do graduate leave for other states.
Until people in this area break free from the past and realize the manufacturing era is long gone, they will remain in this rut.

I agree with No better. Instead of just looking at the numbers and what looks like guessing, talk to the people who are out of work. My husband has been out of work since Feb after 5 yrs with his company. Although he has unemployment, there is little hope of him finding something else. He is well qualified for many jobs, and he searches 5 jobs site daily, but there just isn't anything. If you want to spend money on compiling numbers that just aren't accurate, then spend it on creating jobs.
