AKRON, Ohio — A northern Ohio church congregation has taken a five-day hunger challenge to raise money for the poor in Kenya.
The Akron Beacon Journal reports (http://bit.ly/s2oW16 ) that more than 50 people at Connection Church ate nothing but rice and beans for five days, donating the money they saved on groceries to a Kenyan school that provides children with meals.
The Rev. Tony Myles jokes that the diet "definitely messes with your digestive system," but raises awareness of the average diet of orphans in the Third World.
This is the second year the church has undertaken the challenge. In 2010, it raised more than $1,000 for a new floor for the school operated by the group providing meals for the Kenyan children.
