COLUMBUS, Ohio — A wide-ranging proposal to change multiple areas of Ohio election law is headed for a vote on the House floor.
The House Elections and Ethics committee approved the bill Tuesday on a party-line vote, with Democrats in favor and Republicans opposed. The bill would shrink the early voting period but expand the number of early voting sites. It also seeks to streamline voter identification laws and reduce the number of provisional ballots used.
It would permit voters to register online without having to send in any follow-up paperwork.
The bill is championed by Ohio Secretary of State Jennifer Brunner. If it were to pass the House, it would face an uncertain future in the Republican-controlled Ohio Senate, which has been debating its own bill.
