HAMILTON — Challengers are lining up like never before in bids to unseat U.S. Rep. John Boehner, R-West Chester Twp., in this year’s elections.

Two Republicans have filed to run against Boehner, the House Minority Leader, in the Republican primary — more than he has faced since he was first elected in 1990.

And a U.S. Army veteran, attorney and Democrat from Liberty Twp. also plans to launch his campaign this week. All of them are new to politics.

Both Republicans whose names will appear on the May 4 GOP primary ballot with Boehner define themselves as moderates who feel underserved by partisan rancor on Capitol Hill.

Manfred Schreyer owns Taffy’s coffee shop and pub in Eaton, while Tom McMasters is a retired U.S. Air Force captain living in Huber Heights.

Democrat Justin Coussoule, a purchasing manager with Procter & Gamble and a retired Army captain who holds a law degree. plans on launching his campaign this week.

“I do think there’s a legitimate group in this district that is not satisfied with Boehner’s representation,” Coussoule said. “I do think there’s a fighting chance (to beat Boehner). I really do.”

The deadline to file for candidacy is Thursday, Feb. 18.

Boehner doesn’t seem too concerned about the slate of challengers.

“Congressman Boehner is focusing on offering the people of southwest Ohio better solutions to help small businesses create jobs, help struggling families restore savings, curb government spending and make Congress more open and accountable,” said Boehner spokesman Cory Fritz.

Boehner ended last year with a campaign war chest of more than $600,000.
